Constituents of Rep. Miller-Meeks hold a ‘Stand Up For Your Constituents Town Hall’
Bettendorf, Iowa - Over 100 constituents of Iowa’s First Congressional District gathered in Bettendorf Sunday afternoon to hold a town hall meeting calling for Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks to stand up for her constituents.
Rep. Eric Sorensen of Illinois’ 17th Congressional District attended in place of Miller-Meeks since she decided not to attend, and listened as constituents spoke out against the devastating cuts already made by Elon Musk’s DOGE. From healthcare to education to veterans’ benefits, these cuts are threatening the well-being of families across Iowa to pay for handouts for the ultra-wealthy and corporations.
The townhall comes just after Miller-Meeks voted to advance a budget plan that requires massive cuts to Medicaid, food assistance, and other essential programs working Iowans rely on in order to pay for more tax cuts for corporations and billionaires. As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, Miller-Meeks will be a key decisionmaker and deciding vote on Medicaid cuts that could rip health care away from 140,000 constituents in IA-01.
Jay Williams spoke as a concerned constituent and shared his story about his grandson that has substantial medical needs. To him, Medicaid is why his grandson is able to access the healthcare he needs.
“He would not be able to live with us without Medicaid, that’s what has made it possible for us to bring him up,” Williams said. “My observation is that people who are employed are accountable to their employers. The employers get to know what their employees are doing and why. If our Representative were here I would want her to tell us about what she is doing and why she is doing it.
