Miller-Meeks and Nunn Vote to Endanger Social Security & Veteran Benefits
Des Moines, Iowa -- Yesterday, Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Congressman Zach Nunn both voted for a continuing resolution (CR) that cuts funding for vital programs Iowans rely on. It allows Elon Musk’s DOGE to continue making it harder for seniors to get their Social Security checks and for veterans to get the health care they deserve, while cutting funding for thousands of renters to stay in their homes. They also voted to allow Trump’s tariffs and trade war that hurt Iowa’s economy to continue unchecked—instead of using congressional authority to stop them—potentially raising prices even more for working Iowans.
At the same time, Republicans in Congress are continuing to seek ways to cut funding for Medicaid and other programs hundreds of thousands of Iowans rely on in order to pay for tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and corporations.
"Nunn and Miller-Meeks need to remember the people they represent," retired educator and Social Security beneficiary from Des Moines Hazel Hull said. "They're supposed to stand up for working Iowans — folks like my neighbors, my family, and me — not billionaires or wannabe kings. So many Iowans count on things like Social Security to get by, yet instead of protecting those programs, they’re cutting things we rely on to hand out even more tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. We expect some partisan politics, but it’s heartbreaking they’d rather help out billionaires, and corporations than stand up for Iowans like me."
