Trump Enacts Tariffs, Triggers Tax on Consumers
Today, the Trump administration announced massive new tariffs on a broad range of critical goods. These new taxes will continue to increase the cost of groceries, cars and repairs, gas, and other consumer goods as Iowans are already struggling with high prices.
The administration and House Republicans intend to pay for massive tax handouts to corporations and billionaires with these tariffs—forcing hardworking Iowans to pay the bill.
Fairness for Iowa, a coalition of grassroots organizations, calls on Congressman Zach Nunn and Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks to stop enabling Trump’s tariffs and instead prioritize policies that uplift Iowa families instead of burdening them with higher prices.
Tony Thompson is an Iowa farmer and small business owner. He says that the reckless implementation of tariffs is leading to an economy driven by fear due to the rising costs of groceries, farm equipment, building materials, energy, and other goods.
“President Trump is raising the cost of living for everyday Iowans, and he must stop,” Thompson said. “Implementing these tariffs is not only reckless, but it will also make food more expensive, drive up costs for farmers and businesses, and ripple through key industries like agriculture and construction—leading to even more economic pain for Iowans. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress have done nothing to lower costs. Instead, they’ve enabled Donald Trump to use tariffs as a backdoor tax on the working class to fund more tax breaks for the ultra-rich. This is not lowering the cost of living as he promised—it’s doing exactly the opposite. Iowans need our members of Congress, including Congressman Nunn and Congresswoman Miller-Meeks, to stand up for Iowa families like mine, oppose these tariffs, and fight against policies that make it harder to put food on the table.”
