Two Years Later: Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Lowers Costs and Creates Jobs for Iowa, No Thanks to Nunn

Des Moines, IA — Yesterday marked the two year anniversary of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Legislation, and Iowans are already seeing the benefits. As of October 2023, more than 115,000 Iowa households are already saving on their monthly internet bill due to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Matt Sinovic, the executive director of Progress Iowa, a member of the Fairness for Iowa coalition, issued the following statement in response to the two year anniversary:

“When we invest in America, we can make our drinking water safer, your commute shorter, and the things we buy cheaper. Two years since President Biden signed it into law, that’s what the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is doing in communities across our country.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is bringing down costs and improving Americans' quality of life -- but MAGA Republicans like Zach Nunn are already trying to dismantle these gains by voting to cut funding for crucial programs established by the law. We can't let them take away this generational opportunity to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. As Congress considers funding bills for appropriations, Nunn should vote against these dangerous cuts to infrastructure and transportation."

MAGA Republicans have already tried to dismantle Americans’ quality of life through:

  • Already voted for an Energy and Water Funding Bill that would take funding away from a program established in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that helps “save thousands of high-paying jobs across the country.” The bill also raises energy and utility costs or hard working Americans by cutting energy assistance programs.

  • Now, Republicans are considering an extreme transportation and housing funding bill that would slash public transportation programs across the country, and defund programs established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Not only that, Republicans’ plan would slash affordable housing programs and raise housing costs for Iowans.

 Impact on Iowans

The Biden-Harris Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law means people can drive on safer roadways, drink safer water, get internet access no matter where they live, and spend less time in traffic and more at home with their family.

Bridges

  • Iowa is expected to receive approximately $3.9 billion over five years in federal funding for highways and bridges to ensure the roads on which Iowans drive daily are safe and sound.

Water

  • The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law “represents the largest investment in water infrastructure in American history, including the first-ever dedicated federal funding to replace lead service lines and address dangerous PFAS chemicals.”

Internet Access

  • 83,509 homes and small businesses in Iowa do not have access to high-speed internet infrastructure – the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law invests $65 billion to provide affordable, high-speed internet to everyone in America.

Navigator Research

  • Two in three Americans continue to support the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law two years after it was signed into law by President Biden.

  • Most elements of the infrastructure law are even more popular than the law itself, particularly replacing and upgrading water pipes, building and repairing roads, and upgrading and repairing electric power grids:

  • Replacing and upgrading water pipes that are contaminated with lead (net +79; 87 percent support – 8 percent oppose, including support from 79 percent of independents and 82 percent of Republicans);

  • Building and repairing roads and bridges across the country (net +77; 86 percent support – 9 percent oppose, including support from 79 percent of independents and 78 percent of Republicans);

  • Expanding high speed internet to all American households, including those in rural communities (net +62; 77 percent support – 15 percent oppose, including support from 73 percent of independents and 63 percent of Republicans).
