Congressman Zach Nunn’s Absence at Town Hall Raises Concerns

Constituents from Iowa’s Third Congressional District Seek Answers on Medicaid, Social Security, and Tax Fairness

DES MOINES – Today, May 29, 2024, community leaders and passionate constituents from Iowa’s Third Congressional District came together for a public town hall, eager to voice their concerns and seek answers directly from their representative. Despite being in office for over 500 days without hosting a single public town hall, Congressman Zach Nunn was noticeably absent from the event, leaving many Iowans frustrated and disappointed.

“I came today to see if Congressman Zach Nunn would show up so I could express my concerns on behalf of organized labor,” said Paula Martinez, President of South Central Federation of Labor AFL-CIO.  Too often, we see him working for corporate interests instead of working families. This is evident by his support of tax breaks for those at the top and plans that would put the burden on the backs of families and seniors by threatening programs like Medicare and Social Security. Congressman Nunn needs to support the right to organize and join a union without interference and be able to belong to a union without being disparaged. Congressman Nunn must do better for Iowans, not support corporate interests!”.

Constituents gathered to question Nunn’s controversial votes, including his support for cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and other vital programs that many Iowa families rely on. They were also ready to ask him about his vote to keep credit card late fees high and urge him to support President Biden’s plan to expand the Inflation Reduction Act which aims to lower health care costs for Iowans.

“I’m fortunate to have retired after a lifetime of hard work,” said Ken Sagar, President of the Iowa Alliance for Retired Americans. “I paid into Social Security with the promise that it would support me in retirement. Congressman Nunn’s support for plans that could cut these benefits jeopardizes the livelihood of many rural Iowans like me who depend on these checks. It’s time for him to stop threatening the benefits we’ve earned.”

The town hall was an opportunity for the constituents of Iowa’s Third Congressional District to engage with their representative’s voting record and make their voices heard. Despite Congressman Nunn's absence, the event highlighted the community's determination to hold their elected officials accountable and advocate for policies that support all Iowans.
