Iowans Deliver Petition Demanding that Congressman Zach Nunn Protect Social Security and Medicare

Petition calls on Nunn to safeguard Social Security and Medicare and protect retirement security for seniors

DES MOINES – Yesterday, local community leaders and constituents of the 3rd Congressional District delivered petition signatures to Congressman Zach Nunn’s offices in Creston, Ottumwa, and Des Moines. Iowans in the 3rd Congressional District sought to hold their congressman accountable for his votes to undermine access to Social Security and Medicare, make their voices heard, and urge the Congressman to protect these critical lifelines.

“We delivered these petitions just days before the anniversary of Social Security on August 14, and a couple weeks after the anniversary of Medicare on July 30 to remind our Congressman just how important these programs are to Iowans,” siad Matt Sinovic, Executive Director of Progress Iowa. “Congressman Nunn has a commitment to protect the interests of Iowa’s seniors and their families. We demand that he support legislative measures that ensure the well-being and financial security of Iowans and that begins with ensuring all Iowans may retire with dignity and support.”

"We showed up today to let our Congressman know that he has a duty to uphold as our representative,” said Sue Dinsdale, Executive Director of Iowa Citizen Action Network. "Zach Nunn needs to prioritize his senior constituents’ access to retirement security and health care. These programs need to be defended and strengthened so that Americans can have less financial stress on their plate as they age. Congressman Nunn needs to host open town halls to hear the views of the people he serves."

Instead of fighting for Iowa families, Congressman Nunn voted to put two programs critical to helping families retire comfortably at risk. Nunn's proposed legislation was a balanced budget amendment, which would subject Social Security and Medicare to potentially deep cuts, according to AARP. Nunn also supported H.R. 2811, a bill that would have led to the closure of Social Security field offices and layoffs of staff, negatively impacting their capacity to assist individuals applying for or receiving Social Security benefits, according to the Center on Budget & Policy Priorities.

Iowans are demanding that Congressman Nunn vote to protect Medicare and Social Security. By doing so, Congressman Nunn can help build a healthier, more prosperous future for all residents of the 3rd Congressional District.
