Retired Educator from Greenfield Asks Congressman Zach Nunn’s Chief of Staff to Commit Congress to Fair Tax Reforms in 2025

Olesen joined citizens from across the U.S. to meet with and urge Members of Congress to make the U.S. tax code fairer by raising taxes for the wealthy and big corporations when the 2017 tax law expires next year

Washington, DC –  Today Susie Oleson of Greenfield, Iowa met with Congressman Zach Nunn’s Chief of Staff in Washington, D.C. As a retired educator, small business owner, and constituent of Congressman Nunn, Oleson shared her concerns that the 2017 tax law passed by Republicans is skewed heavily toward the rich and big corporations.

Oleson met with the Chief of Staff after her request for a meeting with Congressman Zach Nunn was declined. Similar requests to meet with the Congressman by the Fairness for Iowa coalition have been declined for the past year. Oleson joined citizens and a coalition of organizations from more than twenty-two states, including Fairness for Iowa, to deliver a message about tax fairness to Congress.

“I traveled here from Greenfield, Iowa to try and get an audience with my Congressman,” said Susie Olesen. “I’m proud to unite with leaders from across the country to speak to Members of Congress, well before the 2017 tax law expires next year: Americans and Iowans want to see the rich and corporations pay their fair share and more investments made in our families at home. We will continue using our voice, despite Congressman Nunn’s continued refusal to meet with us personally, and his refusal to hold public town hall meetings in our district.”

Convened in Washington by a groundbreaking new organization working to deliver lasting tax justice, Fair Share America, members will stress the need to raise the corporate tax rate, ensure the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share, and build a tax code that prioritizes investments in the families, workers, and communities who are essential to growing the economy.

Olesen met with Congressman Zach Nunn’s Chief of Staff to urge her representative to reverse course on the unfair tax policy Nunn has consistently supported. The message she carries was on behalf of the constituents of Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District who overwhelmingly want to see the rich and big corporations pay their fair share – and alongside many members of Congress who are already aligned with this.

Fair Share America has been on the forefront of fighting for tax justice in Iowa and will now expand their focus in 2025 to ensuring wealthy households and corporations pay their fair share at both the state and federal levels. We have been fighting for awareness and justice on the front of tax fairness in Iowa for decades, and we are ready to make our voices heard before the 2017 Republican tax law expires next year."
