Three Questions for Zach Nunn as as Runs Toward a Government Shutdown

Representative Nunn and House Republicans are pushing us closer to a shutdown by demanding funding cuts that would have devastating impacts for hard-working Iowa families

Des Moines, Iowa - As the Republican-controlled House barrels toward a government shutdown, Congressman Zach Nunn is supporting budget cuts that would put wealthy interests ahead of hard working Iowans. These cuts would make it harder for seniors to access their Social Security benefits, slash funding for teachers and preschool programs, and cut money for food programs like SNAP and WIC, while protecting wealthy tax cheats from paying what they owe.

Since taking office, Rep. Nunn has refused to hold a public town hall meeting. In order to address the concerns of his constituents, we request that he answer these three questions:

  1. Why are you continuing to put wealthy corporate interests and their political power ahead of hard-working Iowans struggling to put food on the table?

  1. What will you advise seniors in your district to do if they can’t get assistance with the Social Security and Medicare benefits they rely on?

  1. What will you say to a preschooler and their parents if you cut funding to give them the classroom and education experience they deserve?

Republican Representatives Nunn, Miller-Meeks, Feenstra and Hinson are allowing their party to push us into a government shutdown unless we let them take away food assistance, weaken access to Medicare and Social Security, and put health provider payments at risk, all while increasing the cost of living and cutting funds for education and clean drinking water.

The harmful policies Republicans are pushing and the things they are willing to shut down over will raise costs and hurt working families. Specifically, their demands would

  • Hurt 113,200 Iowa students by forcing layoffs up to 1,300 educators

  • Eliminate preschool slots for 430 kids in Iowa by cutting Head Start funds

  • Increase housing costs for more than 100 Iowa households by cutting Housing Choice Vouchers.

  • Force more than half a million Iowa seniors and Iowans with disabilities to endure longer wait times for Medicare assistance

  • Increases burdens for doctors and hospitals, especially rural providers, by making it harder to pay them on time

  • Puts Iowa loved ones in nursing homes at risk by reducing the  Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services inspections of nursing homes by at least 10%.

  • Delay help and services for the 710,000 Iowans on Social Security and Supplemental Security Income

  • Block 210,000 Iowa workers—1,400 adults and 800 youth—from job training opportunities and workforce development services
