ICYMI: Nunn Voted To Cut Essential Programs

Des Moines, Iowa -- While Congress narrowly avoided an entire government shutdown, House Republicans, including Rep. Zach Nunn, nonetheless voted last Friday for a bill that contained extreme spending cuts that would hurt farmers, seniors, children and their parents, and small businesses. Even though this plan did not become law, it clearly demonstrates Rep. Nunn’s priorities.

Nunn voted for this bill that would have made massive cuts to programs Iowans rely on.  essential services like access toSocial Security and food assistance programs. Closing federal offices like the Social Security Administration is a disservice to the millions of American seniors, children, and families who rely on the critical benefits they provide. By cutting WIC by 30%, Zach Nunn would force women and children to face the prospect of going without the nutritious food they need to survive and thrive.

Nunn and his Republicans kicked the can down the road until November 17th, when government funding will run out once again. Congressman Nunn should change course and oppose these types of drastic cuts that hurt his constituents as he considers funding bills in the coming weeks.

Ken Sagar, President of the Iowa Alliance for Retired Americans is urging Iowans to call their representatives and express their concerns about the potential cuts that would increase the cost of health care and other everyday goods:

“If more Iowans voice their concerns, our representatives will be more likely to take action and protect funding for programs such as Medicare, Social Security, and food assistance. Writing letters to representatives to show support for these programs also helps raise awareness. By taking these actions, Iowans can ensure that their voices are heard and that those who rely on these programs will still have access to the resources they need.”
