STATEMENT: Zach Nunn’s Broken Promises for Iowa Veterans

Nunn’s voting record includes potential cuts to health care access for 75,000 Iowa Veterans

Des Moines, IA — As Iowans recognize the service of those who fought for our country, one veteran is speaking out about Congressman Zach Nunn’s failure to support veterans in our community and across the country.

Kevin Shilling, 1st Sgt. U.S. Army (Retired) from Greenfield, Iowa, offered the following statement:

“As a veteran I usually hear the same promises from politicians. They claim they’re going to this or that for veterans. But when it comes time to fund it, they refuse. Or veterans end up on the chopping block as part of their political game.

“And I see Zach Nunn as another politician who says one thing and won’t back it up. It seems like he's there to vote the way his party wants and ignore what Iowans and veterans really need. So far he just hasn’t kept the promises he’s made to veterans.

“Nunn promised to support veterans in Congress. But then he voted to cut our health care. Then he tried to claim he didn’t, and that was proven false. My bottom line is if you tell me you're going to do something, I expect you're going to do it. And if you're not going to do it, veterans deserve an answer why not.”

Nearly 174,000 veterans in Iowa rely on access to health care they earned serving our country. They need Congress to protect their care and benefits, but Rep. Zach Nunn voted for the “Default on America” Act – which threatened to cut funding for veterans’ benefits and jeopardize access to care for more than 75,000 Iowa veterans. Then, in an attempt to save face, Nunn signed a letter claiming that the legislation did not cut veterans’ benefits, a claim PolitiFact rated as “mostly false.
