RELEASE: Nunn Backs New Extreme Speaker

Rep. Zach Nunn backs Rep. Mike Johnson as the new House Speaker – along with his history of extremism, corporate tax breaks, and votes to cut benefits on which Iowans rely

Des Moines, Iowa — Today, Congressman Zach Nunn was one of more than 200 House Republicans who elected Congressman Mike Johnson as House Speaker this afternoon.

Unfortunately, Johnson’s dangerous record didn’t deter Iowa’s representatives, including Nunn, from voting for him. The election of Johnson as speaker comes at the end of three agonizing weeks of complete chaos after former Speaker McCarthy was thrown out.

While Iowans continue to struggle with rising costs of everyday goods and services, Rep. Nunn and House Republicans have shown their true colors once again by electing a Speaker with a history of working against working families and voting for huge tax breaks for the rich.

“With today’s vote, Congressman Nunn proved yet again that he is not prioritizing Iowans first,” said Matt Sinovic, the Executive Director of Progress Iowa. “Just when we thought the nominees couldn't get any worse, Rep. Johnson arrives with a new level of extremism. Nunn’s choice for Speaker of the House voted, and even led House Republican efforts, to cut Social Security and Medicare that Iowans rely on, while voting to give huge tax cuts to corporations and the wealthy. It’s time for Nunn to prioritize the needs and wellbeing of his constituents rather than siding with extremist politicians and big corporations.”
