Trump’s Tariffs Threaten Iowa Families Trying To Make Ends Meet

Des Moines, Iowa -- Today, the Trump Administration implemented 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico as well as an additional 10% on China. These new taxes will increase the cost of groceries, gas, and other consumer goods as Iowans continue to struggle with high prices.

The administration and House Republicans intend to pay for massive tax handouts to corporations and billionaires with the tariffs—forcing hardworking Iowans to foot the bill.

Fairness for Iowa, a coalition of grassroots organizations, calls on Congressman Zach Nunn and Congresswoman Marianette Miller-Meeks to oppose Trump’s tariffs and instead prioritize policies that uplift, rather than burden Iowa families with higher prices.

“President Trump and House Republicans think they can use tariff funds to pay for more tax breaks for the ultra-rich and wealthy corporations, but Iowans know it’s not our trade partners who will pay – it’s us,” Iowa farmer and small business owner Tony Thompson said. “Implementing these higher tariffs will raise prices on groceries, housing, and other necessities for Iowa families, workers, and small businesses already struggling with high prices. Additionally, the ripple effects from higher tariffs on key industries in Iowa–such as agriculture and construction–will lead to even more economic pain with food and housing costs for people in communities all across the state. This is not lowering the cost of living as he promised – it's doing exactly the opposite! Iowans need our members of Congress, including Congressman Nunn and Congresswoman Miller-Meeks, to oppose these tariffs and tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy, and fight for Iowa families.”
