Miller-Meeks and Nunn Vote to Pass House Budget Plan That Includes Cuts to Medicaid

Des Moines, Iowa -- Last night, Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted for a budget plan that includes slashing Medicaid and SNAP in order to give massive tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy and big corporations.

Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Congressman Zach Nunn cast the deciding votes for this budget, which threatens the health and financial security of hundreds of thousands of Iowans. Iowans have been demanding that they reject this harmful plan by visiting the offices of Congresswoman Miller-Meeks and Congressman Nunn and delivering over 700 constituent signed petitions during House Recess, but instead they chose to side with billionaires and wealthy corporations.

“This budget plan means that families in Iowa could be left to fend for themselves without the Medicaid coverage and SNAP benefits they rely on to survive,” Matt Chapman, a Medicaid advocate from Waukee said. "Taking healthcare away from hardworking Iowans would be devastating to our communities, especially in rural areas where hospitals depend on Medicaid coverage."

Robyn Agu, a host home provider in Altoona, provides 24-hour care for adults with disabilities. She explains that through Medicaid, she is able to provide a home and involved life for the adults her family cares for, and that there’s really nowhere else for them to go.

“We are terrified of the consequences of losing Medicaid coverage,” Agu said. “Nunn promised to defend Medicaid when he was campaigning, and now he won’t side with the people he made those promises to. He needs to remember who he works for: ALL Iowans, including the most vulnerable, NOT unelected billionaires trying to play king.”
