ACA ANNIVERSARY: Iowans Deliver Petition Demanding Congressman Nunn Defend Affordable Care Act and Vote To Expand the Inflation Reduction Act
DES MOINES – Today, local community leaders and constituents of the 3rd Congressional District gathered to deliver a petition to Congressman Zach Nunn’s office urging him to protect the Affordable Care Act (ACA), support the President’s plan to make subsidies that help Iowans afford their ACA health insurance plans permanent, and expand the Inflation Reduction Act’s provisions that make prescription drugs cheaper for Iowans. The event took place less than a week before the 14th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, and a week after President Biden introduced his budget that would permanently extend subsidies that help Iowans afford their ACA health insurance plans.
“The Affordable Care Act has been a pillar of support for many families in our state,” said Sue Dinsdale, Executive Director of Iowa Citizen Action Network. “From offering health care coverage at a more reasonable price, to ensuring people can’t be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition, the ACA has certainly saved many Iowans from unnecessary financial hardships stemming from health care costs.”
The Affordable Care Act has been instrumental in expanding access to health care while reducing costs for thousands of Iowans. Additionally, the ACA paved the way for other policies that help Americans with health care costs like the Inflation Reduction Act. The Inflation Reduction Act has further supported affordable health care by empowering Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices, capping insulin costs at $35 for Medicare beneficiaries, and funding ACA subsidies to help Iowans pay for their health insurance on the ACA marketplace.
“We showed up today to let our Congressman know that he has a duty to uphold as our representative,” said Rochean Cofield, a social worker from Des Moines. “Even entertaining notions to cut funding from the ACA or Inflation Reduction Act shows that Zach Nunn is not prioritizing his constituents’ access to affordable health care. These programs need to be defended and strengthened, like the President has proposed, so that Americans can have one less financial stress on their plate.”
The petition delivery reflects the desires of the 3rd Congressional District for their Congressman to represent their interests. Congressman Nunn must protect the Affordable Care Act from any potential cuts and support President Biden’s plan to expand the Inflation Reduction Act. By doing so, Congressman Nunn can help build a healthier, more prosperous future for all residents of the 3rd Congressional District.
